Make it // Crochet Mini bowls

Here's another great project to help use up odd ends of yarn...
and organise at the same time.
There are a couple of ways to do this - completely in crochet (below left and back), or for a perfectly flat base, you can use felt for the bottom of the bowl.... which is what I'm going to do for this project.

What you need:

A scrap of felt fabric for your base - I've used a heavy / bonded melton type felt, but whatever you have on hand is fine
Leftover yarn - I've used 3 ply cotton
Chalk pencil or fabric marker
Crochet hook - I'm using a 2mm hook
Scissors
Awl

To get started trace a circle onto your felt, in whatever size you want for your bowl.
In my case my circle is about 7cm in diametre - I just traced around a jam jar lid.

We're going to punch holes in the felt to crochet through, so next you want to mark up where you want to make those holes.
An easy way to do this is think of the circle as a compass and mark out your N, S, E and W.
Then mark halfway between each point, then halfway again between those points....and then halfway again those points... and you'll have something like the above...
Cut out your circle...

Now take your awl (or similar implement) and punch holes at each point you've marked - taking care not to punch holes in yourself... or rub out your chalk as you go.

Time to start crocheting... we're going to work in (english) Double Crochet / DC.
Secure a loop on your hook and DC through one of the holes in your felt (i.e., hook through felt, pull through yarn (2 loops on hook), pull yarn through both loops)...
Then chain one (to account for space between each punched hole) and DC through the next loop... and chain one...

and repeat...

Until you've made your way around the whole circle. Slip stitch into your first stitch to join. Then chain one, to start your next round and DC into the back of each chain of the previous row...

And continue with the same.... changing yarn colour as you see fit. You're not increasing any stitches here, so naturally  bowl shape starts to form. it tends to come up "inside out" so flip your bowl out the other way, so the right side of your stitches are on the outside, as below...

I did a couple of rows in pink, then a couple in navy and back to 3 in pink.
And then all you have to do is tie it off...

How speedy was that?!

The crochet will start curving back in a little, but you'll have a lovely flat base from your felt - here is the completed bowl upside down...

Perfect for keeping little bits and pieces in... maybe jewellery...

Or beads from your various projects...
Below are some to the other bowls I've made in a finer 2ply mercerised cotton:

Experiment with your colours and yarns... these are so quick, you'll have a bunch of them in no time.

Happy making!
